Both hands are in the subject's lap; he holds an open book with his left hand and a pair of spectacles in his right. The subject has gray hair, gray eyes, and a pale complexion. He wears a black suit, a white collar and stock, and a vermilion scarf. On the desk to the left are three books and pages of a manuscript. A thermometer hangs on the wall in left background. Signed and dated "J.R. Lambdin / 1856" in left center of canvas, on the desk below the manuscript pages.
